Rant
So there was an anti-abortion protest in the city I live in today, basically people standing around holding signs with dead fetuses.
That was frustrating enough in itself but what really got me was when I saw two large trucks with giant anti-abortion ads on the side.
I kid you not this is what the ads read, I may be slightly misquoting here but the general message is the same.
On one of the trucks was a picture of a duck in oil and a picture of an aborted embryo, this is what the caption said:
“Oil companies accidentally kill ducks, abortion doctors purposely kill babies.”
The ad on the other truck showed a picture of a pregnant woman smoking and a picture of…you guessed it! An aborted fetus. The caption read:
“Smoking unintentionally harms babies, but abortion intentionally kills them.”
I am extremely confused by this message, like massively so. I almost don’t even know where to begin. It seems like they’re totally okay with harmful behavior as long as it doesn’t result in death? Or in the case of the first ad they’re okay if death is accidental?
Like, what if I get pregnant and decide I want to consume massive amounts of alcohol. Are they gonna come out with an ad that says:
“Drinking alcohol may cause FAS in a baby, but abortion will kill a baby.”
So they’re totally okay with the potential harming of the fetus as long as it doesn’t result in death? Is that where this is going? It just seems very glib to me, like: “Oh yeah your baby may have complications that they will deal with for the rest of their lives as a result of your actions while pregnant but that’s totally alright with me because you didn’t get an abortion.”
It just makes me feel like they cease caring as soon as the baby is born. They’re campaigning and campaigning for anti-abortion laws but don’t give a rat’s ass if the child in question grows up in a good home or not. They don’t care that the person they’re telling to get an abortion may not be able to take care of a child, may not even be fit to do so.
And then I wonder how much money was spent on these signs they made, how much was spent on renting two trucks and covering them in anti-abortion advertisements? What if instead of spending them on offensive advertisements they instead used that money to help out single mothers struggling to make ends meet and provide for their child(ren).
And it’s about that time that I start to realize that a lot of these people parading around with their anti-abortion signs, feeling all superior as they do so (because hey, they have morals, unlike the rest of us godless souls) don’t actually care about the children they claim to protect.
I’m sure this isn’t the case for all of those against abortion but for most of the cases I’ve seen this seems to ring true. I’ve never actually heard an anti-abortionist talk about the life of the child after he or she is born, about whether the mother that carried the child is even able to raise said child.
I find this incredibly disturbing and it makes me question the motives of the people running the anti-abortion movement because if not to protect the unborn baby then why? Protection certainly doesn’t seem to be the motive when there are ads essentially saying it’s okay to participate in harmful behaviors that could permanently harm a child.
Anyway, that’s my rant for the day.
